SPPU to Host Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Programme

SPPU to Host Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Programme

The Department of Microbiology at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) is organizing a three-day event to teach students about the dangers of using antibiotics incorrectly.

Antibiotics are medicines that fight bacteria, but when people use them for the wrong reasons, like for a cold caused by a virus, or don't finish their full course, it can make the bacteria stronger and harder to treat.

This is called antimicrobial resistance.

The event will have talks by experts, fun activities like plays and quizzes, and discussions to help students understand how to use antibiotics properly.

Professor Karishma Pardesi, who leads the department, says that in India, people often get antibiotics without a doctor's prescription, which makes the problem worse.

The department is also researching other ways to fight bacteria besides antibiotics.

Last November, they had a similar event as part of World Antimicrobial Awareness Week.

Students can sign up for this event online.
