Nepal Floods Kill 691 As India Delivers Aid To Kathmandu
Severe floods struck Nepal and the Tibetan side of the border.
Nepal’s Police said 691 people had died, and many others were still missing.
Rescue teams saved almost 3,000 people, including 163 foreigners.
India sent a fourth plane carrying aid to Kathmandu.
More rain and thunderstorms could make the rescue work harder.
The floods began after ice and rocks collapsed in the Himalayas.
This collapse caused huge amounts of water and debris to rush through villages.
Officials said a nearby glacial lake was slowly draining, making a major lake burst less likely.
Nepal’s Police reported that the flood death toll reached 691, while thousands remained missing.
Rescuers had saved nearly 3,000 people, including 163 foreigners, by Saturday, August 29.
India’s fourth aid flight landed in Kathmandu, according to External Affairs Minister Jaishankar.
Fresh rain and thunderstorms were forecast in affected areas, potentially complicating rescue operations.
A glacial and bedrock collapse triggered flooding along the Nepal-Tibet border; officials said the risk of a related glacial lake bursting had decreased.
