Train-Bus Collision Kills 28 as Gandhi Warns Punjab

On September 12, 1986, a train crashed into a bus in Assam.

The crash happened at a railway crossing without a worker to control traffic.

At least 28 bus passengers died.

More than 60 people were hurt, and 48 were taken to hospitals.

Railway officials said the bus driver did not take enough care before crossing.

On the same day, Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi spoke about border security in Punjab.

Punjab had appointed a committee to examine a border encounter.

Gandhi said the central government could take action if Punjab weakened border security.
