Assam Minister Seeks Region-Specific Financing for Agricultural Transformation
Assam’s finance minister wants farming loans and support to match the needs of each region.
He said one financing plan may not work equally well everywhere.
Many farmers cannot get formal loans because they do not have the right land papers.
Farmer IDs could help these farmers receive more targeted support.

Assam Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah urged region-specific agricultural financing tailored to states’ production patterns and local conditions.
Baruah called for stronger institutional credit and support for tenant farmers, lease farmers, forest-rights beneficiaries and small tea growers.
He advocated end-to-end value chains, including local processing, storage, marketing and export infrastructure, to increase farm incomes.
The minister highlighted agarwood, premium ginger and turmeric as Assam products requiring improved processing, regulation and export links.
He also sought rapid-response mechanisms for farmers facing floods, droughts and pest outbreaks across Assam and Northeast India.
