Jana Nayagan Release Delay Sparks Political Controversy
The movie Jana Nayagan, starring actor Vijay, was supposed to be released on January 9.
However, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) did not give the necessary clearance in time.
The producer of the film has gone to the Supreme Court to challenge a decision by the Madras High Court that stopped an earlier order to quickly give the movie a certificate.
Meanwhile, political leader Rahul Gandhi has accused the central government of trying to block the film, saying it is an attack on Tamil culture.
The government says any decision follows legal procedures and is not targeting any specific culture.
The next hearing in the case is on January 21.
The producer of Jana Nayagan, KVN Productions LLP, approached the Supreme Court challenging the Madras High Court's interim order that stayed a single-judge direction to grant the CBFC clearance to the movie.
The Madras High Court stayed a single judge's order directing the CBFC to immediately grant a censor certificate to Jana Nayagan, leaving the fate of the film in limbo.
Vijay, the actor in the movie, recently launched his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
The film was slated for a Pongal release on January 9 but ran into last-minute hurdles after the CBFC did not issue certification in time.
The division bench of the Madras High Court granted an interim stay against the single judge's verdict, which directed the CBFC to give clearance to Jana Nayagan.
