Lok Sabha Passes Bill Enabling Future UPI MDR, Sitharaman Clarifies

Lok Sabha Passes Bill Enabling Future UPI MDR, Sitharaman Clarifies

India has a digital payment system called UPI that lets people send and receive money using their phones, and it is very popular.

Right now, using UPI is completely free for everyone.

A group of lawmakers called the Lok Sabha passed a new law that could change this in the future.

The law does not add any new fees right now, but it gives the government permission to decide later whether shops should pay a small fee called MDR for accepting UPI payments.

The Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, says this fee would only be paid by merchants, not by customers.

She says the money could help banks build better and safer payment systems.

Businessman Ashneer Grover disagrees and says adding any fee would be a big mistake that could hurt mobile payments.

Some experts also worry shops might pass the cost on to customers or stop accepting UPI.

For now, nothing has changed, and UPI payments remain free.

The government will decide about the fee only later, after getting advice from the NPCI-led steering committee.
