Kiran Desai's 'The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny' Explores Solitude and Relationships

Imagine two young Indian people, Sonia and Sunny, who are both feeling very lonely while living far from home in America.

Their families think they should get married to help with their loneliness, but things don't go as planned.

Sonia gets into a very bad relationship with an artist named Ilan, which makes her even sadder.

Sunny is trying to become a journalist.

They meet each other a few times, but a lot of the story is about how lonely they are when they are apart.

The book also talks about other people in their families who are lonely too.

Even though the writer uses beautiful words, the story has so many characters that it feels a bit messy.

It tries to show how people deal with being alone, but it's hard to tell if everyone truly learns to be happy by themselves.
