West Bengal Voter List Revised
The Election Commission in West Bengal has updated the voter list and removed about 58 lakh people who have died, moved away, or were registered more than once.
They found some mistakes in the list, like people's names not matching their parents' names or having the wrong gender.
One big mistake was changing the name of a famous politician, Mohammed Salim, to 'Awasthi' and making him look like a Brahmin.
The Election Commission says they will fix these mistakes before the final list is published in February.
People who have been removed from the list can apply to be added back if they have the right documents.
West Bengal's draft voter list released after Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, removing 58 lakh voters (7.6%).
1.67 crore voters flagged for 'logical discrepancies' including name mismatches and gender errors.
Notices to be served within 7 days for voters under scrutiny, with hearings to follow.
Notable error: CPM leader Mohammed Salim and his son's names changed to 'Awasthi' in the draft roll.
Election Commission to correct errors before the final list is published in February 2024.
