EC to Organize Special Camps for Sex Workers in Kolkata
The Election Commission is setting up special camps in Sonagachi, Kolkata, on December 9 to help sex workers.
These camps will make sure that the names of sex workers and their children are included in the voter list.
A group called Durbar, which works with sex workers, asked for these camps because many sex workers have trouble filling out the forms needed to vote.
The camps will also listen to the problems of sex workers and help them.
The Election Commission is doing this because of a rule from the Supreme Court that says sex workers should be able to enjoy their civil rights without their profession being made public.
The Election Commission will organize special camps in Sonagachi on December 9 to help sex workers with voter registration.
The camps were requested by Durbar, an organization working with sex workers, due to difficulties faced during the enumeration process.
Three camps will be set up in wards 18 and 26 to check for missing names and correct form filling.
The camps aim to include the names of sex workers and their children in the voter list, as many do not have the necessary documents.
The initiative is supported by a 2022 Supreme Court verdict that advocates for the civil rights of sex workers.
