Parliament Forms 31-Member Joint Panel on Removing Jailed Leaders, Opposition Decries 'Rubber Stamp'
India's Parliament has created a special group of 31 lawmakers to study some new proposed laws.
These laws suggest that if a leader, like the Prime Minister or a Chief Minister, is arrested for a serious crime and stays in jail for 30 days straight, they might lose their job.
A lawmaker named Aparajita Sarangi will lead this group.
However, a major opposition group called the INDIA alliance is choosing not to be part of this special group, calling it unfair.
They believe the group is mostly made up of members from the ruling party and its allies, and they feel it's just a formality.
The group will look at these proposed laws and then give its opinion.
Parliament has formed a 31-member Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to review bills proposing the removal of jailed PMs, CMs, and Ministers.
The proposed bills mandate the removal of elected officials arrested on serious criminal charges for 30 consecutive days.
BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi has been appointed as the Chairperson of the JPC.
The INDIA alliance, including Congress, is boycotting the JPC, alleging it is biased towards the ruling party.
The JPC will examine the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, and related bills for Puducherry and Jammu and Kashmir.

He stated that 340 MPs from the INDIA alliance are boycotting it.
