New Civics Test for US Citizenship Applicants Begins
If you want to become a U.S. citizen and weren't born here, you'll need to take a civics test.
Starting October 20, 2025, there's a new civics test.
It's an oral test with 20 questions from a list of 128.
You need to answer 12 questions correctly to pass.
Some questions may change based on current events, like who the president or your state's governor is.
If you're older (65+) and have been a permanent resident for a long time, you might get a shorter test and can take it in your preferred language.
USCIS will implement the 2025 Naturalization Civics Test.
The new civics test applies to those who file Form N-400 on or after October 20, 2025.
The test consists of 20 questions from a pool of 128 civics questions.
