Puducherry Assembly unanimously opposes Karnataka’s proposed Mekedatu dam project

Puducherry’s lawmakers voted together against a dam Karnataka wants to build at Mekedatu.

Mekedatu is about five kilometres from the Tamil Nadu border.

Puducherry leaders are worried the dam could reduce the Cauvery water reaching their region.

They said the plan does not fit with the Supreme Court’s decision on sharing the river’s water.

The Assembly asked India’s central government not to approve the dam.

It also asked Karnataka to stop pursuing the project.

Leaders said farmers in Karaikal could be badly affected.

They believe the area could face severe drought if the dam is built.
