Tamil Films Trend Across 60 Countries as Netflix Expands South Cinema

Netflix says Tamil films are being watched and discussed in many countries.

Their stories are reaching people in places such as Brazil, Mexico, Poland and Portugal.

Netflix says many viewers use subtitles or dubbing to watch stories from other languages.

The Tamil film Made in Korea reached the top spot among non-English films on Netflix and trended in 53 countries.

Netflix India executive Monika Shergill said streaming can add to cinema rather than replace it.

She noted that India has fewer than 9,000 cinema screens for a population of 1.5 billion.

Netflix has also created Southverse, a place in its app for South Indian films.

Shergill encouraged filmmakers to try genres such as modern urban romance.
