Safer Roads: Black Spots on NH-48 Receive Safety Upgrades
Imagine roads have spots where accidents happen a lot.
To fix this, the government worked with groups to make these spots safer on a highway near Mumbai and Pune.
They fixed things like confusing intersections, and added speed cameras to catch reckless drivers.
This included closing gaps in the middle of the road to prevent turns and improving signs so drivers see things better.
Since the changes, fewer people have been hurt or killed in accidents.
The program is so successful that they want to do it on more dangerous roads in the state.
It's like giving the roads a safety checkup to help everyone travel more safely.
15 high-risk crash locations on NH-48 were upgraded.
Initiative involved collaboration between MSRDC, SaveLIFE Foundation, Maharashtra Highway Police, and Highways Infrastructure Trust.
Upgrades included engineering solutions and enforcement technologies.
Fatalities on NH48 reduced by 67% from 2018 to 2024.
Early 2025 data shows a 51% reduction in road crash fatalities.
