Sensex, Nifty Down as Crude Tops $90 Amid US-Iran Tensions

Sensex, Nifty Down as Crude Tops $90 Amid US-Iran Tensions

Stocks are tiny pieces of companies that people can buy and sell.

In India, two big groups of stocks are called the Sensex and the Nifty.

On this day, both went down because investors felt worried.

One big worry was oil, which got more expensive — a barrel of Brent crude cost about $90.

Oil became costlier because there is tension between the United States and Iran, and because a very important shipping route for oil, called the Strait of Hormuz, is tangled up in the dispute.

When oil costs more, companies can spend more money, so investors become cautious.

Some companies, like Mahindra & Mahindra and Bharti Airtel, lost value, while banks like State Bank of India and Asian Paints gained.

Experts said the market was moving sideways, staying in a small range instead of making a strong move up.

Investors were also waiting for new US data about consumer prices.

Market watchers said they were keeping an eye on oil prices and US-Iran talks.
