FDA Crackdown on Adulterated Milk Impacts Mumbai Dairy Industry

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Maharashtra has been cracking down on adulterated milk in Mumbai.

Over the past two months, they have inspected 360 establishments, seized 1,60,329 litres of adulterated milk, suspended 35 licences, and registered seven FIRs.

The crackdown has removed about 4-5% of adulterated milk from the market, leading to a slight increase in milk prices.

While this has improved milk quality and benefited honest farmers and organised dairies, it has put pressure on small businesses that struggle to meet the new regulations.

The FDA's July 3 compliance order, which requires pasteurised milk to be sold in sealed, labelled packaging, has also changed the economics of transport for some suppliers.

Despite the crackdown, there is no shortage of milk for households, but business establishments like restaurants and sweet manufacturers are feeling the pressure.
