Videos Show Families Collecting Leftover Oil After Modi Birthday Diyas
Large numbers of small clay lamps called diyas were lit for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday.
One event in Ujjain used more than 33 lakh diyas.
After the celebrations, videos showed poor children and families collecting oil left in the lamps.
They put the oil they found into plastic bottles.
The videos reportedly came from several places in Madhya Pradesh.
The scenes drew attention because they showed poverty alongside a large public celebration.
The celebration was also connected to a Bharatiya Janata Party campaign called “Aashirwad Ka Diya.”
