Tamil Nadu Free Car Offer Sparks DMK Opposition

Tamil Nadu Free Car Offer Sparks DMK Opposition

Tamil Nadu’s chief minister announced that all 234 lawmakers could receive a government car.

The cars are meant to help them travel around their constituencies and meet residents.

The government also proposed ₹75,000 each month for a driver, fuel and maintenance.

The DMK opposition party said its 59 lawmakers would not accept the offer.

The DMK said the state has debt and should first check whether lawmakers already own cars and how much money they have.

The government said some lawmakers, especially those from smaller parties, may not have cars or adequate housing.

It said cars are useful tools for their work rather than luxuries.

The dispute is about whether the plan is necessary support or an unnecessary cost for the state.
