Supreme Court Orders Elephant Clinics, Medical Records for Captive Elephants

The Supreme Court is the highest court in India.

It has made new rules to protect elephants that live with people, called captive elephants.

The Court said every captive elephant must visit a special elephant clinic for regular health check-ups.

Each elephant will also get its own medical record, like a health diary.

The Court wants sick elephants to receive treatment on time, not only when they become very ill.

There are more than 2,700 captive elephants in India.

Some live with private owners, and some live at temples, zoos, circuses, forest departments, or rescue centres.

The Court also asked for reports on the elephants' DNA tests and their living conditions.

Temple owners said their elephants are taken care of and are different from circus elephants.

The Court said that no matter who owns an elephant, everyone must make sure it is healthy and treated kindly.
