Northeast Student Unions Protest CAA on 6th Anniversary
On December 11, 2023, student groups in the northeastern states of India held protests to mark the 6th anniversary of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
They gathered in places like Guwahati, Margherita, Nalbari, and Shillong to demand that the CAA be repealed.
The CAA is a law that gives citizenship to certain people from neighboring countries, but the protesters say it is unfair and threatens their rights.
They also want the government to recognize and honor those who were killed during earlier protests against the CAA.
The groups involved include the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO), the Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU).
They all believe that the CAA is a bad law and are determined to keep fighting against it.
Student unions across Assam and Meghalaya staged protests on December 11, 2023, to mark the 6th anniversary of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
Protests were held in Guwahati, Margherita, Nalbari, and Shillong, with demands for the repeal of the CAA and recognition for martyrs killed during previous anti-CAA protests.
Organizations involved included AASU, NESO, AJYCP, and KSU, all of which consider the CAA a threat to indigenous rights and identity.
Protesters condemned alleged police brutality during the earlier anti-CAA movement and called for official state recognition for the five people killed in police firing.
NESO chairman Samuel Jyrwa described the CAA as a 'draconian law' and urged continued opposition to the legislation.
