India-EU Summit: Historic Trade and Security Pact
India and the European Union (EU) are having a very important meeting.
They are going to sign a special agreement to work together on security and defence.
This is a big deal because it's only the third time the EU has done this in Asia.
They are also trying to make a trade deal called a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that will make it easier for both sides to sell things to each other.
The EU wants India to follow certain environmental and labour rules, but India thinks these are not fair.
They will also talk about making it easier for students and workers to move between their countries.
Both sides want to work together to make the world safer and more connected.
The summit will also discuss a big economic project called the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), even though there are some tensions in the Middle East.
The leaders from the EU, including Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa, will be special guests at India's Republic Day celebrations.
India and the EU are set to sign a Security and Defence Strategic Partnership during the summit, marking a significant milestone in their bilateral relations.
Negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) are nearing conclusion, with both sides aiming to finalize the deal despite gaps on sustainability and standards.
The summit will include discussions on a comprehensive mobility framework for students, researchers, and workers to facilitate easier movement between India and the EU.
Both sides aim to deepen cooperation on security challenges, including maritime security, cybersecurity, and counter-terrorism, with potential joint production of military equipment.
The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) will also be discussed, despite ongoing tensions in the Middle East, as part of efforts to diversify trade routes and reduce reliance on traditional partners.
