Gaddafi-Shaped Ecstasy Seizure Highlights Libya’s Growing Drug-Hub Role

Gaddafi-Shaped Ecstasy Seizure Highlights Libya’s Growing Drug-Hub Role

Libyan authorities found about 100,000 ecstasy pills shaped like Muammar Gaddafi.

The pills showed his face, hair and traditional clothing.

Officials said the drugs arrived by ship from an unnamed European country.

They were hidden inside a cargo van at a Libyan port.

Authorities said they followed the shipment after receiving a tip.

Libya has been divided and unstable since Gaddafi was killed in 2011.

The United Nations says drug groups use Libya to move drugs between Africa, Europe, the Middle East and other regions.

Weak institutions, porous borders and its long coastline make this easier.

The United Nations has recommended stronger cooperation, justice systems and anti-corruption efforts.
