Trump Administration Imposes South Africa Travel Sanctions Over Alleged Discrimination

Trump Administration Imposes South Africa Travel Sanctions Over Alleged Discrimination

The United States says some South African officials are responsible for unfair treatment of white and other minority people.

It plans to deny or cancel visas for officials connected to those policies.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the measures address land seizures, racial discrimination, and violence.

South Africa’s government says these accusations are false and based on misinformation.

The United States points to a law allowing some unused land to be taken without payment.

It also points to policies designed to give Black South Africans more opportunities.

The two countries also disagree over South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the United Nations’ top court.

The new visa policy could be followed by additional U.S. measures.
