Justice Department Plans 1,000 Election Monitors for Midterms

The US Justice Department plans to send about 1,000 workers to watch polling places during the November midterm elections.

These workers are called election monitors.

They look for problems such as discrimination or difficulties for people with disabilities.

Some Justice Department staff have already watched primary elections in several states.

The department has not said exactly where all the monitors will go.

Voting-rights groups say the monitors could help protect voters.

They also worry that too many federal officials could make some voters feel nervous or interfere with local election workers.

These concerns may be especially important for immigrant, naturalised and non-English-speaking voters.

Asian-American organisations are watching the plan because Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders make up about 16 million eligible voters.
