Protesters Clash with Police at Texas Detention Center
A group of about 100 protesters gathered outside an immigration detention center in Texas.
They were upset because a 5-year-old boy named Liam and his dad were being held there.
The protesters wanted everyone to be released and for the government to stop supporting immigration enforcement.
The police used tear gas to stop the protest.
Two congressmembers, Joaquin Castro and Jasmine Crockett, visited the center and said the boy was sad and not feeling well.
They also said there were no criminals at the center, just people seeking asylum.
A judge stopped the boy and his dad from being sent back to their home country for now.
About 100 protesters gathered outside the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, Texas, demanding the release of detainees, including a 5-year-old Ecuadoran boy named Liam Conejo Ramos.
Texas state police used tear gas to disperse the protesters, with one canister temporarily incapacitating an AFP journalist.
Democratic congressmembers Joaquin Castro and Jasmine Crockett visited the center and reported that the 5-year-old boy was depressed and sad, and that there were no criminals among the detainees.
The boy and his father, Adrian Conejo Arias, were taken into custody after immigration officers used the child as 'bait' to arrest the father in Minneapolis.
A federal judge temporarily blocked the deportation of the boy and his father.
