Spanish singer Talibelico revives Punjabi-Mexican ties via fusion music
There is a singer in California named Talibelico.
He grew up speaking Spanish, raised by his Mexican mom in Tijuana.
He became interested in the Sikh faith and learned how to tie a turban.
A long time ago, many Punjabi men from India married Mexican women in California.
Talibelico wants people to remember that forgotten part of history.
He makes music with a Punjabi singer named Harveer Singh, mixing Mexican and Punjabi sounds.
Their song 'World Power' is about how immigrants help the United States.
Some people wonder if it is okay for Talibelico to wear a turban when he is not Sikh.
Talibelico says he respects the turban and hopes to bring communities together.
The articles disagree about whether his father was Indian, so that part is unclear.
Talibelico, 28, a Spanish-speaking singer raised by a Mexican mother in Tijuana, performs Punjabi-Spanish fusion music while wearing a Sikh turban in California.
He collaborates with Harveer Singh, 30, a Punjabi singer from Jalandhar who now works as a commercial truck driver in Yuba City.
The duo released the song 'World Power,' highlighting immigrants' contributions to the US, and performed at a UCLA event on April 25 organized by the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund.
Retired UC Irvine professor Karen Leonard documented at least 385 marriages between Punjabi men and Mexican women in California's agricultural valleys in the early 20th century.
The articles contradict each other on Talibelico's father: Article 1 says he was neither Mexican nor Punjabi and left when Talibelico was two, while Article 2 says his father is Indian.
Sikh American scholar Tejpaul Singh Bainiwal questions whether Talibelico's turban is cultural appropriation or appreciation; Talibelico says he honors both heritages.
