Delhi AQI Surges 100 Points, Data Accuracy Questioned
Imagine Delhi's air quality is measured by a number called AQI.
Usually, this number changes slowly.
But recently, this number jumped up really fast, by almost 100 points in just one day!
This happened even though the weather didn't change and there weren't more cars or factories making pollution.
Some experts think this big jump might mean the numbers recorded were wrong or not fully reported.
They compared the official numbers to what satellites could see, and the satellites showed a much smaller increase.
This makes people wonder if the pollution monitoring system is working correctly.
Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) surged by nearly 100 points within 24 hours, from 279 to 373.
The significant AQI jump occurred between 4 pm on October 29 and 4 pm on October 30.
Experts suggest the sudden increase, despite stable weather and pollution sources, points to potential underreporting of data.
Satellite forecasts indicated a much smaller rise (30%) compared to the ground data's sharp increase (127%).
This discrepancy raises concerns about the accuracy and reliability of official air pollution monitoring in Delhi.
- Who
- Delhi residents
- What
- A dramatic spike in Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI), nearly 100 points in 24 hours, raising questions about the accuracy of pollution data.
- When
- Between 4 pm on October 29 and 4 pm on October 30
- Where
- Delhi
- Why
- The sudden jump in AQI, despite stable weather and pollution sources, suggests potential underreporting or inaccuracies in official pollution data, supported by a discrepancy with satellite forecasts.
Expert Concerns
Official Data & Satellite Forecasts
AQI Discrepancy
Expert Concerns
Experts highlight the dramatic AQI jump as indicative of potential underreporting or data inaccuracies, as weather and pollution sources remained stable.
Official Data & Satellite Forecasts
Official ground data shows a 127% AQI increase, with no computational errors confirmed, though satellite forecasts suggest a more modest 30% rise.
Monitoring Reliability
Expert Concerns
The significant divergence between ground measurements and satellite forecasts raises doubts about the accuracy of Delhi's air pollution monitoring system.
Official Data & Satellite Forecasts
The official AQI readings, despite the lack of clear external factors for the surge, are recorded as observed, leading to questions about their interpretation and the overall monitoring system's effectiveness.
- AQI Change (Oct 29-30)
- Jumped nearly 100 points, from 279 to 373
- Time Period
- Between 4 pm on October 29 and 4 pm on October 30
- Reported Cause
- No major change in weather or pollution sources
- Satellite Forecast (CAMS)
- Indicated a smaller rise of 30%
- Ground Data Change
- 127% jump
