Global Rule of Law Declines, Nordic Nations Lead; India Falls to 86th
Imagine rules for a country like laws for a playground.
The World Justice Project checks how good these rules are in different countries.
This year, they found that rules are getting weaker in most places, making things less fair and safe.
Some countries, especially in the cold North like Denmark, have really strong rules, making them safe and fair places.
But other countries, like Venezuela, have very weak rules.
India's rules have gotten a bit weaker, so it's now ranked 86th.
China's rules got a tiny bit better, and the United States has strong rules but not as strong as the top Nordic countries.
This trend of weaker rules is happening because some leaders are becoming too powerful.
The WJP Rule of Law Index 2025 reports a global decline, with 68% of countries showing a weakening rule of law.
Nordic nations dominate the top rankings, with Denmark at No. 1, followed by Norway, Finland, and Sweden.
Venezuela and Afghanistan are among the countries with the weakest rule of law.
India has fallen six places to rank 86th with a score of 0.49, while China improved to a score of 0.48.
The decline in the rule of law is largely attributed to growing authoritarian tendencies and reduced government accountability.
