SPPU Data Error: Deceased and Retired Professors Listed as Current Employees
Imagine a school is trying to show how many good teachers it has to get a special award.
This school, called SPPU, sent in a list of its teachers.
But, some of the teachers on the list have sadly passed away or have already left the school.
Even a teacher who died in 2023 was listed as still working there!
Other teachers who retired or moved to different jobs were also marked as still employed.
The school also made some mistakes about how educated some of its teachers are.
This makes the school look like it has more teachers than it really does, which can affect its score for the award.
Another university, IIT Kanpur, sent in a list where they correctly showed when teachers left or retired.
This SPPU mistake caused its score for the award to go down a lot this year.
It's like trying to win a race but giving yourself extra points unfairly – it's not honest and can lead to problems.
Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) included deceased and retired professors as current employees in its NIRF 2025 data submission.
The university listed Professor Bhoumik Deshmukh, who passed away in October 2023, as a 'currently working' employee.
Several other former professors, including those who retired or moved to different institutions, were also marked as active employees.
SPPU's data also contained errors in faculty qualifications, listing NET instead of PhD for some department heads.
The errors contributed to SPPU's significant drop in the NIRF 2025 rankings, particularly in the Teaching, Learning and Resources parameter.
