SEBI Proposes Incentives to Boost Debt Market Retail Investment
SEBI, India's market regulator, is looking to make investing in bonds easier for regular people.
They're thinking about offering special deals like higher interest rates or discounts to encourage more people to buy bonds.
Also, SEBI wants to change the rules for companies that have issued a lot of debt, called HVDLEs.
Right now, companies with at least ₹1,000 crore in debt have to follow strict rules.
SEBI proposes increasing this threshold to ₹5,000 crore.
This should decrease the number of companies subject to those rules, and align the rules with how equity-listed firms are governed.
SEBI proposes incentives like higher coupon rates or discounted prices for certain retail investors in corporate bonds.
The incentives aim to increase retail participation in the debt market.
SEBI suggests increasing the threshold for High Value Debt Listed Entities (HVDLE) to ₹5,000 crore.
The move to increase the HVDLE threshold aims to reduce the compliance burden.
The number of HVDLEs would decrease from 137 to 48 if the changes are implemented.
