Weavers Rally in Maheshwar to Protect 250-Year Saree Tradition

Maheshwar is known for a special kind of saree called a Maheshwari saree.

Hundreds of local weavers marched to protect this weaving tradition.

They say it has been part of their town’s identity for nearly 250 years.

The weavers allege that some sarees made elsewhere are being sold using the Maheshwari name.

They say those products can be lower in quality and hurt local weavers.

The group asked officials to stop the unauthorized sales and production.

Its representatives gave a written request to several local offices.

A handloom official said legal action is possible under rules for the saree’s geographical indication.
