Starlink Faces India Affordability Test Amid Cheap Broadband
People in India use a lot of internet, and the amount they use is expected to keep growing.
But internet plans from mobile and broadband companies are often much cheaper than satellite internet.
Starlink's price in India is not yet confirmed, and customers would also need special equipment.
That could make it hard for many families to choose it.
Satellite internet may be more helpful in places where phone networks or fibre cables do not work well.
One satellite connection could also be shared by a school, clinic or community Wi-Fi point.
Experts and regulators describe satellite service as something that can work alongside regular networks.
Its wider use will depend on making the service and equipment more affordable.
Airtel's cited 300 Mbps plan costs about ₹1,599 monthly, Jio's comparable plan about ₹1,499, and BSNL's 200 Mbps plan about ₹899.
Starlink's Bangladesh entry-level plan is about ₹3,300 monthly; its Indian pricing has not been confirmed, and satellite service also requires user equipment.
Indian data use is high, but prices have fallen: the reported average data cost dropped from ₹228 per GB per month in FY16 to ₹7.9 in FY26's third quarter.
Articles describe satellite broadband as most useful in remote or underserved locations and as a complement to terrestrial networks, rather than a broad replacement.
Potential early customers include government institutions, enterprises and shared community connections; affordability, equipment costs and regulatory approvals could shape Starlink's reach.
- Who
- Starlink, Indian telecom and broadband providers including Airtel, Jio and BSNL, and potential customers such as remote communities, businesses and government institutions.
- What
- Starlink faces a pricing and affordability challenge in India, while satellite broadband may serve areas and users that terrestrial networks do not reach reliably.
- When
- The articles cite FY26 data and discuss Starlink's prospective Indian market entry; a launch date is not stated.
- Where
- India; Bangladesh prices are cited as a benchmark for Starlink.
- Why
- Indian customers have relatively low-cost terrestrial options, while satellite equipment and subscriptions are costly; satellite links may still be useful where conventional networks are limited.
Satellite broadband's potential
Terrestrial broadband's advantages
Coverage and role
Satellite broadband's potential
Satellite links could connect remote, isolated or underserved places where laying fibre or installing mobile towers is difficult, costly or commercially unviable, and could support communications when terrestrial networks are disrupted.
Terrestrial broadband's advantages
Mobile, fibre and fixed wireless access networks already cover most villages and offer established connectivity options; the articles characterize satellite service as complementary rather than a replacement.
Price and adoption
Satellite broadband's potential
Customers with limited conventional options, as well as businesses and institutions, may value satellite connectivity; shared terminals could spread costs among users.
Terrestrial broadband's advantages
Indian plans are substantially cheaper than cited Starlink benchmarks, while satellite equipment, installation and monthly subscriptions could deter price-sensitive households.
- Airtel plan cited
- 300 Mbps for about ₹1,599 per month.
- Jio plan cited
- Comparable plan for about ₹1,499 per month.
- BSNL plan cited
- 200 Mbps for about ₹899 per month.
- Starlink Bangladesh benchmark
- Entry-level plans start at about Tk 4,200, equivalent to approximately ₹3,300; this is not confirmed Indian pricing.
- Mobile data cost
- Reported average cost fell from ₹228 per GB per month in FY16 to ₹7.9 in FY26's third quarter.
- Village connectivity
- One cited dataset says 6,32,875 of 6,44,131 villages had 4G connectivity; another says 96.8% of villages had 4G and more than 97% had mobile connectivity.
- Satellite equipment
- Starlink service requires a user terminal and associated hardware; the articles identify equipment and installation costs as adoption barriers.
- Potential use cases
- Remote and underserved areas, enterprises, government institutions, disaster communications and shared community connections.
