Delhi Power Subsidy: Number of Zero-Bill Consumers Rises Under BJP Rule
In Delhi, many people get free electricity if they use very little power.
The government gives a discount for people who use a bit more.
Even though some people thought a new government would stop this, more people are getting free electricity now than last year.
The government says this changes each month because of the weather and how much electricity people use.
They have also planned to keep giving these discounts for the next year.
The number of Delhi power consumers receiving zero electricity bills has increased under the eight-month-old BJP government compared to the same period last year.
In October 2024, 26,59,447 consumers received zero bills, out of a total of 49,64,036 beneficiaries, which includes those receiving 50% subsidy.
The previous year, October 2023, saw 24,64,762 consumers with zero bills and 23,14,308 receiving 50% subsidy.
Power department officials attribute monthly fluctuations in beneficiaries to seasonal changes and usage patterns.
The Delhi government has approved the continuation of the power subsidy scheme for the financial year 2025-26, with a significant budget allocation for the power department and subsidies.
