RFE/RL Seeks Congress Funds After US Financing Freeze
Imagine a radio station, RFE/RL, that tells people news, especially in places that used to be communist.
The U.S. government usually gives them money to operate.
But recently, the government stopped giving them money, which is causing problems.
Now, they're trying to get money from Congress, the group of people who make the laws in the U.S., to keep going.
They already got some money for May after asking a court.
They've had to let some people take time off work and reduce some programs because of the money problems.
The EU has also offered money to help out.
They are also considering other funding options from US and Europe to keep their operations going.
Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) is seeking bipartisan support in Congress to continue operations.
The U.S. administration froze approved federal grants in March, impacting RFE/RL's funding.
RFE/RL received funding for May after a court order but is seeking over $50 million appropriated by Congress.
Funding issues have led to furloughs of about 350 staff and reductions in programming.
The EU has pledged 5.5 million euros ($6.33 million) to support RFE/RL's operations.
