India to Invest ₹4,500 Crore in SCL Mohali Modernization
The Indian government is planning to spend ₹4,500 crore over the next three years to upgrade the Semi-Conductor Laboratory (SCL) in Mohali.
This lab is the only place in India that makes special chips for things like satellites, medical devices, and defense systems.
The government wants to increase the lab's production by 100 times and make it easier for startups and students to create and test their own chip designs.
They also need 25 acres of land from the Punjab government to expand the lab.
The lab uses old technology, so the upgrade will help make better and more efficient chips.
The government is not planning to sell the lab to private companies.
A group of organizations, including C-DAC, DRDO, SCL, and private companies, will work together to make products using the new chips from the upgraded lab.
So far, 56 chips designed by students have been made at SCL.
The Indian government will invest ₹4,500 crore over three years to modernize the Semi-Conductor Laboratory (SCL) in Mohali.
The investment aims to scale up production by 100 times, overhaul old technology, and expand the facility to support chip manufacturing goals.
SCL Mohali will provide support to chip design startups and students, including fabrication, testing, and packaging.
The government has requested 25 acres of land from the Punjab government for the expansion of SCL Mohali, but the state's demand for a higher price has stalled progress.
A consortium comprising C-DAC, DRDO, SCL, and private sector firms will jointly develop products using chips manufactured at the modernized facility.
