India Warns Iron Ore Miners: Increase Production or Face Export Duties/Ban
The Indian government is getting tough with iron ore miners.
They're saying if miners don't dig up more iron ore and lower the price, they might have to pay a tax when they sell it to other countries, or they might not be allowed to sell it at all.
This is to help make more steel in India.
Steel makers say the price of iron ore is making it hard for them to compete with foreign companies.
The government wants the miners to act fast so they don't have to take action and wants them to produce more and export more steel.
Some regions, like Goa, are asking to be exempt from the tax because they mainly export low-grade ore, which is not the best kind for making steel in India.
Government considering export duty on iron ore, possibly a ban, if production and prices don't improve.
The move comes after a high-level meeting, and could be enacted by October 2, 2025.
Government wants miners to halve iron ore prices and increase steel exports.
Industry groups, including steelmakers, are concerned about high iron ore prices.
Some regions like Goa want exemption from any export duty due to low grade ore being unsuitable for domestic use.
