Pune Metro Holds Fleet Steady Until Ridership Justifies Expansion
Pune Metro is seeing more riders, but it is not adding trains or coaches right away.
Officials say each train already carries around 1,000 people.
They want to see enough demand to make the cost of adding trains worthwhile.
First, they plan to make trains arrive closer together.
Peak-time trains currently come about every six minutes.
If the gap is eventually reduced to around one and a half to two minutes, more trains or coaches may be considered.
The trains have three coaches and would be expanded by adding a complete set of three more.
Any additions will need studies and approval, and new trains could come by 2027.
Pune Metro will not immediately add trains or coaches to its Purple and Aqua lines.
Its current fleet has 33 trains: 16 on Line 1 and 17 on Line 2, with two on each line kept for emergencies.
The existing three-coach trains can carry around 1,000 passengers, and services run about every six minutes at peak times and every 10 minutes off-peak.
Officials say they will first shorten the gap between trains; additional capacity would depend on ridership, investment justification, the DPR and approvals.
New trains could be added by 2027, while future coach additions would expand trains from three cars to six as complete units.
