Outward LRS Remittances Rise 3.6% in May 2026
In May 2026, the amount of money Indian residents sent abroad under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) increased by 3.6% compared to the previous year.
This growth was mainly due to a big rise in money sent for investments in deposits and equity.
However, there was a decrease in money sent for travel and education.
The LRS allows residents to send up to $250,000 per year for various purposes like travel, education, investments, and gifts.
While investments saw a significant increase, other categories like travel and education saw a decline.
Outward remittances under LRS grew 3.6% year-on-year to $2.39 billion in May 2026.
Deposit-related remittances more than doubled to $118.12 million.
Remittances for equity and debt investments surged to $363.6 million.
Travel-related remittances declined by 7.7% to $1.28 billion.
Overseas education remittances fell by 38% to $92.61 million.
