ASHA Workers Protest Across Bengal for Pay Hike
ASHA workers in West Bengal are protesting because they want more money for their work.
They say they only get about Rs 5,500 a month, but they work very hard, sometimes 15-16 hours a day.
They want Rs 15,000 a month, time off when they have babies, and money for the families of workers who die.
They also want to be recognized as official health workers.
They have been protesting for a month and even blocked roads in Kolkata.
The police had to stop them, and some workers say they were treated badly.
They are not happy with the government and plan to protest more next week.
ASHA workers protested across West Bengal for a pay hike and better working conditions.
They demanded a monthly salary of Rs 15,000, six months of paid maternity leave, and Rs 5 lakh compensation for the family of a deceased worker.
Protests occurred in Kolkata, Paschim Bardhaman, Nadia, and Bankura, with workers blocking key roads.
A scuffle with police personnel happened in Kolkata on Wednesday when workers were stopped from reaching the health department headquarters.
The workers have been on a 'cease-work' since December 23, supported by the SUCI (Communist) party.
