Japan, Philippines sign new security pacts amid rising tensions
Japan and the Philippines recently signed two important security agreements.
One allows their militaries to share supplies and services quickly.
The other involves Japan giving the Philippines $6 million to build facilities for boats that Japan donated.
This is part of a bigger effort to work together with the United States to address growing tensions in the region, especially in the South China Sea and around Taiwan.
Japan supports a 2016 court decision that rejected China's claims in the South China Sea, which China does not agree with.
China has even taken some actions against Japan because of this.
Both Japan and the Philippines believe in the importance of following international rules and maintaining peace and stability in the region.
Japan and the Philippines signed two defense pacts, including an Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement for military supplies and services exchange.
Japan provided $6 million in Official Security Assistance to the Philippines for building facilities to house rigid-hulled inflatable boats donated by Japan.
Both countries emphasized the importance of trilateral cooperation with the United States amid rising regional tensions.
Japan supports the 2016 Permanent Court of Arbitration ruling rejecting China's expansive South China Sea claims, which China has rejected.
The pacts come as the Philippines takes over the chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and tensions rise in the Taiwan Strait.
