India Pushes for Rupee Oil Payments
India wants to pay for its oil using Indian rupees instead of other currencies.
The government is asking oil companies to talk to suppliers about this.
However, foreign suppliers are not very excited about the idea because of trade imbalances.
A committee in India has suggested that the government should work with the finance ministry and the central bank to make this happen.
They also said India should find more places to buy oil from to make sure it always has enough.
The central bank has already made some rules to help with paying in rupees, like special bank accounts for foreign banks.
Indian oil companies are negotiating with suppliers to pay for crude oil in Indian rupees.
Foreign suppliers are hesitant due to trade imbalances.
A parliamentary committee recommends accelerating rupee-based settlements.
The RBI has introduced arrangements for invoicing and payment in INR.
The committee advises diversifying crude oil import sources for energy security.
