India Mandates IMEI Registration, Warns Against Tampering
The Indian government is telling everyone who makes, brings into the country, or sells phones and other electronic devices with special identification numbers called IMEIs to register them.
They also warned that changing these numbers is against the law.
If companies don't follow these rules, they could face serious trouble, like going to jail for up to three years or paying a very large fine.
This is to make sure our phone systems are safe and to stop fake or stolen devices from being used.
The registration has to be done on a special government website called Device Setu before the devices can be sold or used for testing.
Government cautions manufacturers, importers, and resellers about mandatory IMEI registration.
Tampering with telecommunication identifiers, including IMEI, is prohibited under the Telecommunications Act, 2023.
Penalties for violations include imprisonment up to three years and fines up to Rs 50 lakh.
IMEI registration is mandatory for devices manufactured or imported into India.
Registration must be completed on the Device Setu portal before sale, testing, or R&D.
