US Probes Universities Over Possible J-1 Visa Abuse

The US government is looking into how some universities use J-1 visas for visiting researchers.

Officials want to know whether visa rules are being misused or whether other issues could affect research paid for by the government.

The Department of Labor says it has sent subpoenas to some universities.

J-1 visas allow eligible people from other countries to study, teach or do research in the US for a limited time.

Some universities say they are reviewing the requests and will cooperate.

The investigation does not mean the universities have been found guilty of breaking rules.

It also does not automatically cancel the visas of people who already have them.

Universities may change how they sponsor international researchers as the investigation continues.
