Zydus Lifesciences Q1 profit slides 36% to Rs 940 crore

Zydus Lifesciences is a big medicine-making company in India that has been around since 1952.

It told everyone how much money it made in the first three months of its new business year.

This time, its profit was much smaller than last year's — 940 crore rupees compared with 1,467 crore rupees.

That might sound strange, because the company actually sold more medicines than before, making 8,017 crore rupees in sales.

Profit is the money left over after a company pays all its costs, and Zydus's costs grew faster than its sales.

The amount it kept as operating profit also shrank, from 31.8% of sales to 24.1%.

People who own shares in the company did not seem too worried, and the share price went up a little after the announcement.

Zydus makes regular medicines, vaccines and other health products, and sells them in more than 50 countries.

It also owns popular consumer brands through its Zydus Wellness branch.

So even when a company sells more, it can still earn less profit if its costs rise faster.
