Tamil Nadu CM Vijay's Independence Day Address: Sports, Jobs, Anti-Corruption Vows
On India's Independence Day, the leader of Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister Vijay, made a big speech at an old fort in Chennai.
He spoke first in Tamil, the main language of the state, and then said the most important parts again in English so more people could understand.
He told everyone that his government wants to stop corruption and asked people not to tolerate it at all.
He also talked about sports, saying his government will help change how the cricket association is run and create a new authority to look after sports.
A big fund with ten crore rupees will help sportspersons and their families.
He promised many new government jobs, including thousands of sports coaches and many nurses.
He also encouraged people to put solar panels on their roofs to make electricity from the sun.
It was his first Independence Day speech as the state's leader.
Chief Minister Vijay, delivering his Independence Day address in Tamil from Fort St George, repeated key points in English—the second Chief Minister to do so—emphasizing his anti-corruption mission and call for zero tolerance of corruption.
The government will adopt the BCCI's recommended composition for the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association after the association agreed to it.
Vijay announced the formation of a Sports Development Authority and a ₹10 crore fund for the welfare of sportspersons and their families.
The government notified more than 50,000 vacancies across departments—one paper reports 49,098 posts—including 16,000 sports coaches to be appointed by 2026.
The Chief Minister also said 10 lakh staff nurses would be appointed and encouraged households to install rooftop solar under the PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.

Repeating key points in English makes the speech accessible to people who do not follow Tamil, including the anti-corruption message.
Potential critics and concerned voices
Delivering parts of the Independence Day address in English may be seen by some as unnecessary for a largely Tamil-speaking audience.
