Mumbai to widen footpaths on 30 eastern suburban roads

Mumbai wants to make walking easier on 30 roads in its eastern suburbs.

The city plans to redesign the footpaths and nearby road edges.

These roads pass places such as markets, railway stations, schools and bus stops.

Officials first removed illegal structures blocking the footpaths.

Next, they will create a better footpath design.

Many existing footpaths cover drains and are too narrow for comfortable walking.

Urban planners have prepared an integrated design for pedestrians.

Work is expected to start in October after the monsoon rains begin to recede.
