B.R. Shetty's Corporate Empire Collapses in UAE
B.R. Shetty was a successful businessman who started with very little and built a huge healthcare and financial company in the UAE.
He had hospitals, money transfer businesses, and even owned parts of the famous Burj Khalifa.
But in 2019, it was discovered that his company had a lot of hidden debt and had been lying about its finances.
This led to the collapse of his empire.
Courts later found him responsible for the fraud, and he had to pay back millions.
Now, his assets are frozen, and he is facing many legal problems.
B.R. Shetty started with modest beginnings in India and moved to the UAE with little money, building a healthcare and financial empire.
He founded NMC, a hospital chain, and acquired UAE Exchange, transforming it into a multibillion-dollar business.
In 2019, Muddy Waters Research exposed financial irregularities, including inflated cash balances and undisclosed debt.
By 2020, NMC's debt ballooned to $6.6 billion, leading to its administration and the sale of Finablr for a nominal amount.
In 2025, Shetty was ordered to pay $46 million to the State Bank of India, with courts describing his testimony as dishonest.
