Delhi HC Orders GST Council to Reduce Air Purifier Tax
The Delhi High Court is asking the government to either provide clean air or reduce the tax on air purifiers.
A lawyer named Kapil Madan has filed a petition asking the court to declare air purifiers as medical devices.
He says air purifiers are not luxury items but necessary for people in Delhi-NCR due to severe air pollution.
Currently, air purifiers have an 18% tax, which the lawyer argues is too high.
He wants the tax to be reduced to 5%, like other medical devices, because air purifiers help prevent health problems caused by bad air quality.
The court agrees and has asked the government to respond quickly.
The government says there is no clear evidence that air pollution directly causes deaths, but the court and the lawyer believe air purifiers are essential for health and survival.
The Delhi High Court has demanded the government reduce the GST on air purifiers from 18% to 5% or provide clean air to citizens.
A PIL filed by Advocate Kapil Madan argues that air purifiers should be classified as medical devices due to their health benefits.
The court expressed displeasure over the lack of action on the issue and asked the government to respond by 2:30 pm.
Delhi's AQI remains in the 'very poor' category, with readings of 349 in Delhi and 355 in Noida as of 7 am.
The government maintains there is no conclusive evidence directly linking air pollution to mortality, while the petitioner argues air purifiers are indispensable for health.
