India to use AI for grain quality checks
India is going to use smart machines with artificial intelligence to check the quality of grains like wheat and rice.
These machines can quickly and accurately measure things like moisture content and impurities, which will help reduce waste and improve storage.
This is important because India is a big supplier of food to other countries and also needs to manage a lot of grain for its own people.
The government hopes this new technology will make the process faster, fairer, and more efficient, ensuring better quality food for everyone.
India plans to introduce AI-powered automated grain analyzers (AGA) from next year to modernize grain testing, storage, and distribution.
The AI tools use digital imaging and machine learning to assess grain quality, reducing wastage and improving stock management.
Government procurement of wheat and paddy has reached record highs, with 30 million tonnes of wheat and 41.75 million tonnes of paddy procured in the 2025-26 marketing season.
The technology is expected to strengthen welfare schemes like PMGKAY and NFSA, which provide subsidized food grains to about 80 crore beneficiaries.
India's role as a key global food supplier is emphasized, with a 29% fall in global rice prices in 2025 attributed to India's policy shifts.
