Cameroon's Regional Elections Begin Amid Tensions
Cameroon is having elections to choose people for regional councils.
These elections are happening in different parts of the country, and the people voting are local leaders and traditional rulers.
The ruling party is putting up candidates in all areas, and in some places, they are the only ones running.
This is the second time Cameroon has had these kinds of elections.
There have been some protests and problems after the last presidential election, but the government says it will take steps to keep things calm.
The president, Paul Biya, was just re-elected for another term.
Voting for Cameroon's regional elections began on November 3, 2024, with polling stations open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time.
Municipal councillors and traditional rulers are the ones voting to elect 900 regional councillors for five-year terms.
The ruling Cameroon People's Democratic Movement is running unchallenged in several constituencies.
The elections are taking place in 58 divisional headquarters across the country's 10 regions.
Recent protests and acts of civil disobedience followed the October 12 presidential election, with opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary calling for a three-day 'ghost town' protest.
